Ala Buisir

Ala Buisir is an award-winning visual artist and journalist born in Ireland to Libyan parents. She holds a BA in photography from TU Dublin and an MA in journalism from Dublin City University, and is currently completing a practice-based PhD at the University of Limerick. Her research examines the ‘othering’ of Muslim women through Islamophobia and Western visual tropes, developing participatory, arts-based methods that amplify Muslim women’s voices and support digital self-representation. Buisir’s work documents social and political tensions with the aim of fostering awareness and change. She is co-founder of Gorm Media and a board member of the Amal Women’s Association.
